Wheelchair Lithium Battery Charger Compatibility

A lithium battery charger must match the complete power wheelchair configuration. A connector that fits, or the same nominal voltage on two labels, is only a starting point. Review the chair, battery and charger together before purchasing a replacement or planning a conversion.
Identify the Wheelchair and Battery
Record the wheelchair model, battery part number, chemistry and electrical ratings. Include the existing charger model and any changes to the chair. Ask the wheelchair manufacturer or authorised service provider whether the proposed battery and charger combination is approved for that equipment.
Match the Charging Requirements
Electrical limits and charge profile
Compare the battery's specified charging voltage, permitted current and charging temperature range with the charger's documented output and profile. Do not assume a charger intended for a lead-acid battery also supports a lithium replacement. The battery management system is part of the protection arrangement; it is not a substitute for a compatible charger.
Connections and chair controls
Confirm connector type, pin assignment, polarity and any communication or charging interlock requirements. Check whether charging occurs through the chair or directly at the pack. Have an authorised technician review proposed adapters or wiring changes.
Confirm Compatibility Before Use
Request written confirmation identifying all three models and the applicable instructions. The MHRA's assistive technology guidance identifies incompatible chargers and unsuitable replacement parts among safety concerns. Keep the approved charging instructions accessible to the user and anyone assisting them.
