Air travel with a lithium-powered wheelchair needs advance coordination with the airline. Acceptance depends on the mobility aid, battery arrangement and the carrier's current requirements. Prepare the equipment information early enough for the airline to review the actual chair.
Identify the Mobility Aid and Battery
Collect the wheelchair make and model, dimensions, weight, battery chemistry and labelled watt-hour rating. Obtain the manufacturer's handling instructions, including whether the battery is designed to remain installed or be removed for transport. Photographs of the labels and relevant controls can make the discussion clearer.
Confirm the Carrier's Current Requirements
The FAA's PackSafe guidance for wheelchairs and mobility devices distinguishes adequately protected installed lithium batteries from batteries requiring removal. It also advises passengers to contact the airline in advance because carriers may apply additional restrictions. Confirm arrangements for every operating carrier and connecting flight.
Ask how the airline will handle the specific battery, any spare battery, loading constraints and the required paperwork. Do not apply a general consumer-electronics battery limit to a wheelchair without checking the mobility-aid category. Confirm which rules apply to the itinerary before departure.
Prepare the Handover Information
Keep a short handling sheet with the agreed airline arrangements and the wheelchair manufacturer's instructions. Identify approved lifting points, controls and handling precautions where documented. Discuss assistance and transfer needs with the airline, and retain the battery documentation for both the outbound and return journey.
If the battery has been replaced or the chair modified, have the equipment supplier confirm the current configuration before requesting airline acceptance.
