As illustrated in the figure below, a lithium-ion battery cell is built around three essential elements: the electrode assembly, electrolyte, and structural components. Every part plays a critical role in determining the battery's performance, safety, and lifespan.

① Structural Components – The Protective Framework
The outer casing, terminals, current collectors, and safety valve form the battery's structural system. These components not only protect the internal materials from mechanical damage but also ensure efficient current transmission and pressure relief during abnormal conditions.
② Electrode Core – The Energy Engine
The heart of the battery consists of the cathode, anode, and separator.
- Cathode (Positive Electrode): Stores and releases lithium ions.
- Anode (Negative Electrode): Receives lithium ions during charging.
- Separator: A microporous membrane that prevents short circuits while allowing lithium ions to travel freely.
This carefully engineered sandwich structure directly affects energy density, power output, charging speed, and cycle life.
③ Electrolyte – The Ion Highway
As shown in the diagram, the electrolyte is composed of solvents, lithium salts, and specialized additives. Rather than carrying electrons, the electrolyte transports lithium ions between the electrodes, making it one of the most important factors in battery efficiency and safety.
