A first home battery purchase is easier to assess when the project information is organized before a quotation is requested. This checklist focuses on the decisions and documents that help an installer define a suitable residential storage system.
Write down the purpose
Decide whether the priority is solar self-consumption, selected backup loads or electricity-price management. List any appliances that must be supported during an outage and how they are used. Do not assume that a battery selected for daily energy shifting automatically meets every backup requirement.

Prepare the solar and inverter model details, electrical supply information and any available commissioning documents. Describe the proposed battery location and access conditions. Exact equipment identities are more useful than a broad statement that the house already has solar.
Compare specifications and documents
Ask about usable energy, supported power, charging limits, operating conditions and warranty terms. Review the compatibility documentation for the proposed components. A headline capacity or cycle count should be interpreted with its stated conditions rather than used as the only purchasing criterion.
Agree the installation and handover scope
Clarify who handles site assessment, electrical work, configuration, commissioning and service. Request the operating instructions and a clear explanation of normal status, alarms and backup behavior. Keep these records together so future troubleshooting or system changes can begin with an accurate description of the installation.
