How to Size a Home Battery from Electricity Use

A household's electricity bill is a starting point for battery sizing, but total daily consumption does not define a backup system on its own. The useful question is which loads the battery must supply, for how long, and under what charging conditions.
Start with Daily Usage and Essential Loads
Start with actual consumption records and identify the appliances that need to remain available during an outage. Separate essential loads from equipment that can be delayed or switched off. Record both their operating energy and their power demand. A refrigerator running intermittently presents a different load profile from an appliance drawing substantial power continuously.
Define Backup Duration and Solar Charging
Define the required backup period and consider when the battery can recharge. Solar production varies with the installation and conditions, so a daytime generation estimate should not be treated as guaranteed overnight reserve. Decide whether the primary objective is backup, greater use of solar generation, or shifting consumption between tariff periods.
Account for Usable Capacity and System Losses
Nameplate energy is different from usable energy. Review the manufacturer's operating window, the planned reserve and the conversion losses of the complete system. An energy calculation should state these assumptions explicitly. Allowing for losses by applying one efficiency figure is useful only when that figure represents the equipment and operating conditions being assessed.
Review the Sizing Example and Peak Power
Finally, check whether the inverter and battery can supply simultaneous loads and starting demand. Adequate stored energy does not automatically provide sufficient output power. Ask the installer to document the proposed load list, backup duration and assumptions so the system can be reviewed if household consumption changes.
