Behind-the-Meter vs Front-of-Meter Battery Storage

Behind-the-meter and front-of-meter describe where a storage system connects relative to the customer meter. The distinction helps identify who uses the stored energy, how its value is measured and which connection requirements shape the project.
Customer-side storage
A behind-the-meter system serves a facility or household. Possible objectives include using more on-site solar, managing a measured demand peak or supporting selected loads during an outage. These objectives require different operating priorities, so a project should state which function comes first.
Grid-side storage
Front-of-meter storage connects as a grid-facing resource rather than serving only one customer’s internal loads. Its commercial role depends on the connection agreement, operating permissions and applicable market arrangements. The battery specification alone does not establish the services a project is allowed to provide.
Compare the complete project
For a commercial facility, collect interval consumption, the actual tariff, solar generation and critical-load requirements. For a grid-facing project, define the connection point, dispatch expectations and revenue assumptions. In both cases, separate power capability from energy duration and account for conversion losses and operating reserves.
Evaluate backup as a separate function
Energy storage does not automatically provide power when the grid fails. Backup operation depends on the inverter, switching arrangement, protection design and loads connected to the supported circuit. Confirm these functions explicitly rather than assuming that either meter position guarantees uninterrupted service.
