Sodium-Ion Batteries Move Toward Commercial Scale

The sodium-ion battery industry is moving from technology validation toward commercial deployment.
Recent energy storage projects in China are providing clearer real-world benchmarks. At the Renqiu Zhihong 100MW/400MWh project, the lithium-ion system was priced at approximately RMB 0.518/Wh, while the sodium-ion section reached around RMB 1.035/Wh. Sodium-ion therefore remains more expensive today, but its commercial economics are becoming increasingly measurable.
Meanwhile, manufacturers are accelerating product development and mass production.
Hithium recently introduced its N785Ah sodium-ion cell and a 4MWh sodium-ion energy storage solution, targeting up to 20,000 cycles and a 30-year design life. The company plans to begin full-chain mass production and delivery in 2027.
China's sodium-ion manufacturing ecosystem is also expanding rapidly. By July 2026, 34 companies had announced 45 sodium-ion cell production bases, representing approximately 293.7GWh of planned capacity, with 25.2GWh already operational.
Sodium-ion batteries are unlikely to replace LFP across all applications. Instead, they are increasingly being positioned for stationary energy storage, cold-climate applications, commercial vehicles and cost-sensitive mobility markets.
The key question is shifting from whether sodium-ion batteries can work to whether they can achieve competitive cost, consistent quality and long-term reliability at scale.
With larger cell formats, expanding production capacity and more commercial projects entering operation, 2027 could become an important year for sodium-ion commercialization.
