Commercial BESS Fire Safety: Project Review Checklist

Fire-safety review for a commercial battery installation should address the specified equipment, its location and the response arrangements for the site. Begin this work during project design so product documentation and installation decisions can be reviewed together.
Identify the System and Local Review Process
Document the battery chemistry, system configuration, proposed location and intended operation. Ask the responsible designer which authorities, permits and adopted requirements apply. A standard named in a brochure does not by itself establish approval for a particular installation.
Collect the Relevant Product and Test Documents
Request documents identifying the exact models and tested configuration. UL Solutions distinguishes UL 9540 system evaluation from UL 9540A thermal-runaway fire-propagation testing. Review the scope and results of the applicable documents; do not describe a test report as proof that every product or installation is certified.
Review Site Protection and Emergency Planning
Have qualified designers and the relevant reviewers assess access, separation, electrical protection, environmental control, detection and any required mitigation. Specify who receives alarms and how emergency information reaches responders. Use the actual risk assessment to determine measures rather than copying a generic clearance or ventilation value.
Keep Commissioning and Training Records
Record the approved design, acceptance tests, operating instructions and personnel training. Define maintenance responsibilities and how later changes are reviewed. The fire-safety file should remain connected to the equipment configuration throughout its service life.
