Motive Battery Comparison: Weight, Life and Downtime

Battery weight, cycle life and downtime describe different aspects of a motive-power system. Fleet buyers can make a clearer comparison by recording each separately and applying the same equipment duty and service assumptions to every proposal.
Define a Like-for-Like Fleet Comparison
Start with the equipment model, shift demand, usable-energy requirement and available charging opportunities. Identify which operating problems the replacement is intended to address. Ask suppliers to state the configuration and test conditions behind their figures so that unlike battery sizes or operating patterns are not presented as equivalent alternatives.
Review Weight and Equipment Requirements
Compare the mass of the complete installed system, including mounting and required accessories. Confirm the equipment’s approved battery-mass and counterweight requirements where applicable. A heavier battery is not inherently more energy-dense, and a lighter battery is not automatically a suitable replacement. Review installation constraints alongside energy and power requirements.
Compare Cycle-Life Test Conditions
Request the model-specific test basis, including temperature, charge and discharge conditions, depth of discharge and the end-of-life criterion. Compare this information with the intended duty. Keep a cycle-life claim separate from calendar life and warranty coverage; each describes a different consideration for ownership planning.
Measure Charging and Service Downtime
Use actual shift records to distinguish time spent charging, waiting for a charger, receiving routine service and addressing faults. Include any spare equipment or battery-swapping arrangements in the comparison. Estimate ownership cost from documented quotations and operating records, then review results after integration. This provides a more useful purchasing basis than an unsupported percentage reduction in downtime.
